Debian 12 guest, kernel updated to 6.1.0-13, now vmhgfs won't load. Tried everything - complete disaster!

Andrea

RTFM! This is why we use open-vm-tools with DKMS. Official Tools are deprecated for Linux!

Emily Martinez

Nina, I'M USING open-vm-tools! Don't assume I'm an idiot! DKMS fails with "invalid module format"!

This is why I switched to Proxmox. VMware's Linux support has been going downhill for years.

Andrea

Alex, spare us your Proxmox evangelism. Igor: show EXACT error and your /var/log/vmware-install.log

Emily Martinez

[PASTE OF 200 LINES OF LOGS] Happy now? It's clearly the kernel crypto API change breaking everything!

Paul Davis

Why are you even running local VMs in 2024? This is why the cloud exists, people!

Emily Martinez

Johnny, not everyone wants to pay $500/month to run a damn test lab! Some of us have budgets!

David Rodriguez

Igor, try compiling against kernel headers 6.1.0-12 then modprobing. Worked for my RHEL cluster.

Emily Martinez

Dan, YOU GENIUS! That actually worked! Why isn't this documented ANYWHERE?!

Andrea

Because it's a HACK, Igor. The real solution is to wait for VMware to update their code.

Emily Martinez

Nina, in the real world we can't wait 6 months for VMware to fix basic functionality! Dan's solution works NOW.
